Late innings surge pushes Baseball past UT Martin
The Salukis (19-18) opened a five-game homestand with a 10-3 win over UT Martin thanks to eight runs in the Dawgs final two innings at the plate.

TUESDAY'S STARTER Junior Bryce Sablotny will make his Saluki debut. Over the last two years he went 16-5 with a 4.13 ERA at Lincoln Land Community College. He will be the second junior college transfer to start his first game with SIU this season after Derek Fogel started Sunday's game at UAB.

UT MARTIN SERIES NOTES SIU leads the all-time series against the Skyhawks, 25-8. However, the Salukis have lost three of their last four games against UT Martin and three of their last four games at Skyhawk Field. SIU has played two games a year against UT Martin since 2005. In 2012, the two schools split the season series with each team winning at home.

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS UT Martin opened the season this past weekend at Southeastern Louisiana and was swept in a three-game series. The Skyhawks hit just .235 in the series a scored a total of eight runs. Meanwhile the pitching staff posted a 4.88 ERA with Southeastern Louisiana hitting .305 in the series. Tuesday's starter, John Houston, threw two and a third innings in relief on Saturday. He allowed two runs off four hits and took the loss.

OVC OPPONENTS Tuesday's game will mark the first of five consecutive games against opponents from the Ohio Valley Conference. Southern Illinois will face eight of the 11 teams from the OVC this season. On Friday the Dawgs will be back in Alabama for a three-game series against Jacksonville State. On Tuesday, Feb. 26 SIU will travel to Austin Peay for a nonconference game.

SWEET RELIEF Through the first three games of the season, SIU has used seven relief pitchers, and none of them have allowed an earned run in 10 total innings of work. Opponents are hitting .133 (4-for-30) against Saluki relievers this season and have struck out eight times. All four hits the bullpen has allowed have been singles. The only run the pen has allowed was unearned but was the difference in Saturday's 1-0 loss.

DEFENSIVE NOTES SIU turned five double plays in three games this weekend. That is a much higher rate than last year's team, which turned a total of 39 double plays in 59 games.

SLOW START The Salukis have hit .196 as a team after three games this season. SIU has hit .176 (6-for-34) with runners on base and .235 (4-for-17) with runners in scoring position. Three of those hits with runners in scoring position came on Opening Day. However, SIU's pitchers held UAB to a .220 (9-for-41) average with runners on base and a .222 (4-for-18) average with runners in scoring position.
