TUESDAY’S STARTER Sophomore Bryan Waldrop will make the start for SIU. He made two starts for the Salukis last season. The Marion, Ill. native finished the season 0-1 with a 7.29 ERA in 16 appearances. Waldrop allowed two runs, one of them earned, in one inning of work in his 2012 season debut on Friday at North Florida.

AGAINST THE SKYHAWKS This is the first of two meetings with Tennessee-Martin this season. The Skyhawks will visit Carbondale on April 18. Southern Illinois leads the all-time series against Tennessee-Martin, 24-7. However the Salukis lost both games against UTM in 2011. That broke a winning streak of three straight against the Skyhawks, which dated back to the 2009 season.

MONTGOMERY NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK Austin Montgomery was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday. The junior right fielder powered the SIU offense in its opening weekend series at North Florida. He went 8-for-13 with six RBI and recorded multiple hits in each game. His 11 total bases and .846 slugging percentage lead the Missouri Valley Conference. In Saturday’s game, his home run to lead off the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game winner in a 4-2 victory. He matched a career high twice in the series by recording three hits on Friday and then again on Sunday. In Sunday’s game, he set the tone for SIU’s 16-run outburst by driving in a pair of runs in the first inning. He finished the day with a career high five RBI in the game.

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS UTM enters the game with an 0-3 record after being swept by Georgia Southern this weekend. The Skyhawks return 22 of 35 players from their 2011 team, which finished 20-36 overall. UTM finished in sixth place in the 10-team Ohio Valley Conference with a 10-13 conference mark. This year’s team was picked to finish eighth in the OVC Preseason Poll. Designated hitter Phil Sorensen made the Preseason All-Conference team. He is their leading returning hitter after hitting .340 in 2011. Third baseman Matt Haynes is off to a hot start, going 4-for-9 in the first three games of 2012.

HOT START Donny Duschinsky has already surpassed his doubles and home run output from 2011. In 115 at-bats last year he had just one double. Through three games this season he has two doubles in 13 at-bats. The sophomore also hit his first career home run in Sunday’s game at North Florida.

COACH CAL HONORED The MVC announced this weekend that the league’s Coach of the Year award will be renamed to honor Dan Callahan. Callahan led the Saluki program for 16 seasons before losing a long battle with cancer in November of 2010. Callahan led Southern to six 30 win seasons and is one of only five coaches in MVC history to reach 200 league wins. Of his 595 career wins, 442 of them came at SIU. The award will be the first Coach of the Year award in the league to be named after a former MVC coach.
