    Game Notes

Sophomore Pete Slavonic will make his fourth start of the season. He pitched well in his first two starts, surrendering a total of two earned runs in 11 innings of work. Last week against Murray State, Slavonic lasted just two innings and departed after the leadoff man reached with a single in the third inning. He was charged with two runs, although neither of them was earned. Slavonic took a no-decision in Southern’s 7-2 loss. In three starts he is 1-1 and has allowed eight runs, only two of them earned, on his way to a 1.38 ERA.

SIU has dominated the all-time series with a 42-15 record since the two teams first met in 1974. Southern Illinois has won nine of the last 13 games against Murray State but lost the first meeting of 2012. Last Wednesday the Breds beat SIU 7-2 at Abe Martin Field. With the loss last week, Southern is now 3-3 in its last six meetings with Murray State. SIU’s last trip to Murray State resulted in a rain soaked 5-2 loss in a game that was called after four and a half innings. The two teams have played each other at least once annually since 1980 with the exception of 1996 when their scheduled game was rained out.

Murray State is 14-15 on the season, but its 1-5 conference record has Murray State tied for last place in the Ohio Valley Conference. Tennessee Tech swept the Thoroughbreds in a three-game series this weekend. The final two games of the series were decided by one run. Murray State returns 20 letterwinners from last year’s team, which finished 19-32 and seventh in the OVC with a 7-12 record. Offensively Murray State is lead by Ty Stetson, who is hitting .346. The Breds have a team ERA of 5.29. Southpaw Kyle Cornett will make his third start of the season for Murray State on Tuesday. Cornett is 2-1 with a 5.02 ERA. Last week he allowed two runs in four innings of relief against the Salukis and earned the win.

Southern will return home this weekend for a three-game series against Evansville April 6-8.  First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Abe Martin Field. SIU will be back on the road all of next week with a Tuesday game at Southeast Missouri State followed by a Thursday through Saturday series at Dallas Baptist, which starts on April 12.
