LEADING OFF The Southern Illinois baseball team begins a four-game homestand with a nonconference matchup against Southeast Missouri State and looks to extend its nonconference winning streak to eight games.
TUESDAY’S STARTER Lefty Brad Drust will make his sixth consecutive midweek start and the 13th start of his SIU career. The redshirt junior has posted a 2-1 record and 3.92 ERA as a starter this season. He has picked up the win in each of his last two outings. Drust has made nine appearances in 2013, but this will be just his third at Abe Martin Field.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE SERIES NOTES SIU leads the all-time series 48-27-1 and clobbered the Redhawks 25-3 in Cape Girardeau on April 9. The Salukis enter the game having won the last two meetings with SEMO. SIU has won seven of the last 10 meetings with the Redhawks in Carbondale.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS After losing two out of three games to Eastern Illinois this weekend, the Redhawks have dropped three of their last four and five of their last eight games. SEMO is fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 12-9 conference mark. The Redhawks are hitting .285 as a team and are led offensively by Derek Gibson who is second in the OVC batting race with a .367 average. Matt Tellor leads the club with seven home runs and 36 RBI. SEMO has a 5.42 team ERA, which ranks sixth in the 11-team OVC. Tuesday’s starter Alex Winkelman with be making his sixth start of the season. He has also made eight relief appearances.
GOOD TO BE HOME SIU will be at home for all four of its games this week. The Salukis are 11-5 at Abe Martin Field compared to a 7-16 record in road and neutral site games. Southern is hitting .294 in its pitcher friendly park and holding opponents to a .239 average there.
NONCONFERENCE WINNING STREAK Southern Illinois has won seven straight nonconference games. That is the longest such streak by the Salukis since SIU won eight consecutive nonconference games from Feb. 17 through March 3, 2007.
NOT ADDING UP Despite an 18-21 season record, SIU has a higher batting average and more runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, home runs and total bases than its opponents. The Salukis also have a 3.75 ERA compared to its opponents’ 4.51 ERA.
LOOKING AHEAD Beginning Friday, April 26, SIU will host Wichita State in what will be only the second home series for the Salukis this season. They will follow that up with a pair of midweek games. On Tuesday, April 30, SIU will visit Illinois for a 6:05 p.m. game, and on Wednesday, May 1, the Salukis will host Belmont at 3 p.m. in a makeup game from March 26.
