ST. LOUIS – Southern Illinois junior pitcher Sam Coonrod has been selected Missouri Valley Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday. Coonrod was honored for his performance during the period of April 28-May 4.

On Friday, May 2 against MVC leader Evansville, Coonrod allowed one run off four hits in six and a third innings of work. The junior sent down the first nine batters of the game in order and retired 13 of the first 15 hitters he faced. He did not allow a run until the seventh inning. Coonrod maintains a 3.70 grade-point average and majors in management.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, complete at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
