LEADING OFF Southern Illinois will wrap up the 2014 regular season on the road with a three-game conference series against Dallas Baptist. The Salukis will look to climb back over .500 as they gear up for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
FRIDAY’S STARTER Sam Coonrod will make his 14th start of the season and his 39th career start, which ranks seventh on SIU’s all-time starts list. In his last outing, Coonrod tossed six scoreless innings of one-hit ball against Mississippi Valley State and picked up his first win of the season. He has allowed one run off five hits in 12.1 innings over his last two outings and has allowed one run in his last 16.0 innings of work.
SATURDAY’S STARTER Todd Eaton will make his 14th start of the season and 88th career appearance, which ranks fourth in school history. Eaton has a 2.23 ERA in conference games, which ranks fifth in the Valley. In his last outing, he threw two scoreless innings against Mississippi Valley State before a rain delay ended his day. Over his last three starts, he is 1-0 with a 0.95 ERA. He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his last six starts.
DALLAS BAPTIST SERIES NOTES The Patriots lead the all-time series by a 4-2 margin. The two teams first met in 2006 in an early season tournament hosted by Sam Houston State. SIU won its first two games DBU, but the Patriots have won the last four. This will be the third time in the last four years that the two teams face each other in a series and the first time they both face each other as Missouri Valley Conference members. In the last meeting, the Salukis were swept by DBU in a three-game series in Dallas in 2012.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS DBU took two out of three games on the road against Wichita State last weekend. The Patriots are in third place in the MVC and have a chance to move up to the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. Dallas Baptist is last in the MVC with a .254 batting average, but the Patriots lead the Valley with 252 walks. As a result, they are tied for fourth in the conference with a .371 on-base percentage. Mike Wesolowski is hitting .316 and is the only DBU regular hitting above .285. Austin Listi leads the team with nine homers and leads the Valley with 46 runs scored. DBU has a team ERA of 3.75, which ranks fifth in the MVC and is tied for the conference lead with 432 strikeouts. Paul Voelker is second the the Valley with eight wins.
HOME SWEEP HOME This past weekend, the Salukis completed their first three-game sweep of the season by taking three games from the Delta Devils in Carbondale. It was SIU’s first three-game sweep since winning three in a row at Bradley May 10-12, 2013. Prior to this past weekend, Southern’s last three-game sweep at home was against Eastern Kentucky March 28-30, 2013.
FIRST YEAR AT THE ITCH Southern Illinois finished the home portion of the 2014 season by winning seven of its last nine home games. The Salukis completed their first season at Itchy Jones Stadium with a 15-8 record at the new park. Their .652 home winning percentage is the highest under Coach Ken Henderson.
TURNING TWO SIU’s defense turned six double plays this weekend against Mississippi Valley State. The Salukis now lead the MVC with 46 double plays. The Dawgs turned a season-high three double plays on Sunday. It was the second time this year SIU fielders produced three twin killings in a game. Prior to this season, Southern had not turned three double plays in a game since 2011.
CONFERENCE SEEDING Southern Illinois will be either the seventh or eighth seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament this year. SIU and Bradley are both tied with a 4-14 conference mark heading into the final three games of the conference season. Bradley hosts Indiana State this weekend. Since Bradley holds the tiebreaker, SIU would have to finish at least a game ahead of the Braves to claim the seventh seed.
DAILY’S DOUBLE This past Friday, Cody Daily became the first Saluki to record a multi-home run game in 2014 when he hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and hit another two-run home run in the sixth. In doing so, he also became the first SIU hitter to homer in consecutive at-bats since Jordan Sivertsen did it against Murray State on April 3, 2012. Daily and Sivertsen are the only Saluki hitters to accomplish that feat since the start of the 2011 season.
EXTRA! EXTRA! SIU leads the nation with 12 extra-inning games in 2014. SIU is 4-8 in extra-inning games this season. Valley teams have played a total of 28 extra-inning games this year, and Southern Illinois has accounted for 12 of those. The Salukis have also taken part in seven of the eight extra-inning games played in MVC league games this season.
SO CLOSE Seven of SIU’s 14 conference losses have been one run games. Five of the Salukis’ conference losses have been extra-inning games. The Salukis are 1-7 in one-run conference games and 9-6 in one-run nonconference games.
KEEPING UP APPEARANCES Five current members of the Saluki pitching staff are on the top 10 list for most appearances in school history. Closer Tyler Dray is the active leader with 94 career appearances. That ranks third in SIU history. Eaton is fourth on the list with 87 appearances while Matt Murphy, Aaron Snyder and Lee Weld rank fifth, seventh and ninth, respectively. Dray, Murphy and Weld are each tied for third most appearances on the team this season with 15.
WINNING STREAK SIU enters the series with a three-game winning streak. The Dawgs’ longest winning streak of the year is four, from Feb. 18-25. Since then the Salukis have had two three-game win streaks.
