Southern Illinois right-handed pitcher Todd Eaton has been drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 34th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Eaton, who completed his senior season last month, was the 1023rd overall player selected in the draft. He joins SIU teammate Sam Coonrod as the second Saluki selected in this year’s draft.

“It’s very fulfilling to begin a childhood dream of mine,” Eaton said. “I want like to thank SIU, Coach Henderson and Coach Finigan for giving me an opportunity to play at SIU and pursue my goals of playing at the professional level.”

Eaton is tied for second on SIU’s all-time list with 19 career saves and fourth in school history with 89 career appearances. He converted to the starting rotation for his senior year and posted a 3-3 record with a 4.10 ERA. Eaton was at his strongest in conference play this season with a 2-0 record and 2.86 ERA in seven Missouri Valley Conference starts.

“Todd has had a great career as a Saluki and is very well respected by his teammates and the coaching staff,” SIU Coach Ken Henderson said. “We are thrilled that he has earned an opportunity go pitch at the next level. In addition to his obvious talent, he has the work ethic and make up needed to have success in pro ball.”
