CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University has announced that the official ground breaking for the renovation of Abe Martin Field is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25 at 3:30 p.m. The ground breaking, which is open to the public, will take place at Abe Martin Field on the SIU campus. The event will mark the beginning of a $4 million project to overhaul the Saluki baseball team’s home field.

When completed, the new stadium will feature a new artificial turf playing surface, stadium lights and security fence as well as a new grandstand, press box and dugouts. The stadium will reopen for the start of the 2014 season as Abe Martin Field at Richard “Itchy” Jones Stadium in honor of legendary former SIU coach Itchy Jones who took the Salukis to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and three College World Series. In addition, the clubhouse will be renamed for the late Dan Callahan, the second winningest coach in school history.
