    Southern Illinois junior shortstop Jake Welch was named the Prospect League Player of the Week, for week eight of the 2012 season.

    Welch, who plays for the Richmond RiverRats, batted .448 with three home runs, five doubles and six RBI for the week ending July 22. On the season, he is batting .328 in 44 games with 12 doubles, 7 homers and 24 runs batted in.

    During his sophomore year at SIU in 2012, Welch hit .308 in 55 games with a pair of home runs.

    The Prospect League is a collegiate summer baseball league comprising teams of college players from North America and beyond. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid so as to maintain their college eligibility.
