CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball team has selected senior left-handed pitcher Cody Forsythe and junior second baseman Jake Welch as co-captains for the 2013 season.

Forsythe was also a captain for the 2012 squad. He has been the Salukis’ Friday starter for each of the past two seasons, starting 34 games in his three-year career. He earned First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 2011 and was selected Second Team All-MVC in 2012. Over the past two seasons, he has compiled a 13-9 record with a 2.73 ERA. Forsythe has posted a 9-4 record and a 1.54 ERA in 14 career conference starts.

Welch is coming off a breakout 2012 campaign, during which he hit .308 with 21 extra-base hits as the Salukis’ leadoff hitter. After beginning the season at shortstop, he moved to second base midway through the season. Welch led the team with 16 stolen bases in 19 attempts and finished fifth in the Valley with 48 runs scored. He also led the team with five triples.

“It is a great honor to be selected by your teammates, and these two young men are certainly deserving,” SIU Coach Ken Henderson said. “They approach the game the right way and have obviously garnered the respect of the rest of the team. Having leadership from the players is very valuable and important to our success, and there is no doubt they both have what it takes to serve in this role.”

After advancing to the championship game of the MVC Tournament in 2012, the Salukis will open the 2013 season on Feb. 15 at UAB.
