    ST. LOUIS, Mo. -

The final wave of Missouri Valley Conference awards were announced on Thursday, the opening day of the league tournament.

Southern Illinois University guard Anthony Beane was named First-Team Scholar-Athlete, while head coach Barry Hinson finished runner-up in the voting for MVC Coach of the Year. Gregg Marshall, the head coach of undefeated Wichita State, won the award.

Beane averaged 14.6 points per game and was named to both the Second-Team All-MVC and Most-Improved teams earlier in the week. A two-time league Scholar-Athlete of the Week with a 3.20 GPA, he became SIU's first Scholar-Athlete honoree since Bryan Mullins in 2008.

In just his second season at the helm of SIU, Hinson turned the last-place Salukis into the fourth-place team in the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference standings. It marked the biggest leap in the standings in school history. He finished third in the voting a year ago.
