    QUICK FACTS:

    • SIU was 20-13 last season, 3rd in the Valley with a 12-6 record.
    • defeated Colorado in first game of the NIT before losing at Brigham Young in its next game.
    • Bruce Weber is going into his third season at SIU with a 35-25 record (15-12 & 20-13).
    • SIU lost three starters: Chris Thunell (10.8/6.7), Derrick Tilmon (8.2/4.5) and Ricky Collum (9.6/3.9)
    • nine lettermen are returning led by freshman standout Kent Williams (13.3/2.6).
    • Williams was named "freshman of the year" and "newcomer of the year" in the MVC.
    • Williams was SIU's scoring leader with 440, the first freshman to lead SIU in scoring since the Salukis became a Division I team in 1968 following their NIT championship in 1967.

    NEWCOMERS (6):
Another freshman who redshirted last season, Sylvester Willis, figures to be a key this year. Coach Bruce Weber calls him the strongest player on the team with much natural talent. Key to his success may be his ability to blend his ability into being his on-the-floor game and patience.

Other newcomers who are expected to help include:
Marcus Belcher...a good solid player, a role player, but one with experience.
Darren Brooks...a sleeper, multi-talented athlete, expected to be contributor.
Tyrese Buie...athletic, a fine mid-range shooter, should be all-around help.
Toshay Harvey...a very talented player, can score in a lot of ways.
Josh Warren...possesses biggest body on team, good hands and passer, will play.

    RETURNING STARTERS (2)

Brandon Mells...started 28 games last season after once getting into opening lineup in sixth game season...averaged 7.3 ppg...may be quickestplayer on squad...gained valuable experience...needs to develop more maturity...has had a good summer.

Kent Williams...key accomplishments listed above...will return to his natural position at No. 2 guard after having played most of last season at a three spot...game still has room for improvement, but much is being expected of him this season.

    OTHER KEY RETURNING LETTERMEN (4)

Joshua Cross...one of only two seniors on the team...one of better athletes in the MVC...was league's "sixth man of the year" after posting 6.6 ppg and 4.8 rpg averages...is being counted on to provide leadership in final season.

Jermaine Dearman...received spot on MVC's "all-freshmen" team as result of 6.2 ppg and 4.1 rpg season averages...has potential to gain far more honors in career at SIU...Weber feels his continued development is a key to SIU's success this season.

Brad Korn...even though he did not see a lot of minutes of action as a freshman last year, showed he could become a key player in future years...is a fine shooter and needs to develop more strength before he can fulfill expectations.

Abel Schrader...even though he started only five games a year ago, has been in opening lineups 27 times in three-year career at SIU and is expected to provide leadership this season...is a fine shooter and a versatile all-around performer.

    OTHERS (3):

David Carney...improved his game considerably last season and is a definite strong addition to SIU's squad.

Chris Drew...another player who improved his game last year and knows his role.

Jason Ward...perhaps THE most improved player on squad a year ago and one who could definitely be rewarded this season with far more playing time...could be a surprise challenger to more experienced players returning.

    Coach Weber's Thoughts:
Strengths should be overall athletic ability, depth and quality returning players. Weaknesses could be lack of leadership with only two returning seniors, lack of overall size and a difficult non-conference schedule.
