Southern Illinois University's basketball Salukis will be...going for their fourth straight win Saturday (Dec. 2) at noon (CST) when they challenge Indiana in the Hoosiers' Assembly Hall in Bloomington

The matchup will be SIU's first against a Big Ten Conference... team since the 1994 season when the Salukis lost to Minnesota (74-60) in first-round NCAA tournament play at Sacramento, Calif. It'll be the third time SIU has faced Indiana, the last being in the 1963-64 season's opener. The Hoosiers lead 2-0 in the series.

Although the Assembly Hall will present a first-time...experience for SIU's team members, it hardly will be a new experience for Saluki head coach Bruce Weber who made annual visits to Indiana's campus while serving 18 years as Gene Keady's assistant at nearby Purdue.

Weber, now in his third season at SIU, and his Salukis...fulfilled their first goal of the 2000-2001 season Saturday night when they trimmed Ball State and successfully completed a three-game home stand against three teams they had lost to a year ago. The Salukis had opened with a 101-89 victory over Long Beach State, an NIT entry last March, and down Saint Louis University 82-72 earlier in the week. Both Saint Louis and Ball State were in the NCAA 64-team field just eight months ago.

The Salukis followed the same pattern in defeating Ball State...as they had in winning their season's opener, grabbing a comfortable first half advantage and outlasting their opponents the remainder of the game. SIU was up by 20 (43-23) over the Cardinals who rallied in the second half and managed to close to within six at 81-75 with 3:19 remaining. The Salukis, however, scored 12 of the game's final 17 points for the win.
