CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University men's basketball head coach Barry Hinson announced today that former Saluki Matt Shawhas earned his bachelor's degree from SIU with a degree in history.

Shaw, 27, served as an undergraduate student assistant for the team last season after retiring from his professional basketball career in Spain. As a player at Southern, he scored 1,363 career points from 2004-08 and helped lead the team to three conference championships and three NCAA Tournament berths, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2007.

"Matt has meant so much to our program during the past decade, first as a player, then as professional athlete and now as a college graduate," Hinson said. "He has a bright future ahead of him."

A native of nearby Centralia, Shaw is still considering a career in coaching but is also pursuing opportunities in the private sector.

"I'm extremely grateful for the wealth of experiences I've had at Southern Illinois," said. "I'm proud of what we accomplished in Saluki Basketball, I'm proud to say I'm a graduate of SIU, and I will always be a Saluki."

Hinson said Shaw's graduation will also boost the program's Academic Progress Rate (APR) -- a key NCAA measurement of the team's academic success.
