CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University men's basketball head coach Barry Hinson announced today that sophomore center Harry Whitt plans to withdraw from school.

Whitt, a 6-foot-10 center who played in 23 games as a true freshman last season, did not ask for his release and does not plan to play college basketball next season.

"He just decided he has other priorities that are more important than basketball right now," Hinson explained. "We wish him the best and future success in all his endeavors."

Whitt had several strong performances during the middle of last season, scoring eight points at both Bradley and Missouri State, but he was better known to fans for his community service. Whitt spearheaded a toy drive for disadvantaged children and helped with the clean-up efforts in Harrisburg after a tornado devastated the town. He became a recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference's State Farm Good Neighbor Award.

"I want to thank Saluki fans for supporting me during the past year," said Whitt, who recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in his one year at SIU. "I need some time away from basketball to re-set my priorities."

Whitt said he will return to Arizona and possibly enroll at the University of Arizona where his mother teaches.
