Carbondale, IL. - Brandon Mells' career as a member of Southern Illinois University Carbondale's basketball team has officially ended.

Mells, a product of Central High School in Memphis, Tenn., will remain on an athletics scholarship at SIU although he will not count against the Salukis' 13-player limit. As a result, head coach Bruce Weber will be able to replace his squad position with a new recruit.

After having started 28 of SIU's 33 games as a sophomore in 1999-2000, Mells suffered a broken foot fone in a pre-season pickup game a year ago and never fully recovered.

Weber said, "I'm disappointed for Brandon that he could not continue to compete as a member of our team. I am pleased, however, that he will remain in school and complete his degree next year."
