CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University men's basketball coach Barry Hinson announced today that former Saluki forward Matt Shaw has returned to school to finish his degree and will serve as a team manager this season.
Shaw, who scored 1,363 points in his career at SIU from 2004-08, recently retired from his professional basketball career in Spain. At Southern, he helped lead the team to three conference championships and three NCAA Tournament berths, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2007.
"We are blessed to have the presence of a young man like Matt in our program," Hinson said. "He was here during a special period of time for our program, and although he has the title of manager, I know he will have instant respect and credibility from our players."
Shaw said he could earn his undergraduate degree in history education as early as December, but will remain with the program for the entire season.
"I'll see if coaching is something I'd like to do long-term," he said. "Just being around it the last few days, it starts to bring back those feelings of love I have for the game. I'm excited to be back in this community and a part of Saluki Basketball."
A mutual friend put Shaw and first-year head coach Hinson in touch during the off-season.
"Coach Hinson said he'd do everything he could to help me get my degree," Shaw said. "I think that speaks highly of his character."
