ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois University and Kelly Broussard of Wichita State University have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Mullins and Broussard were honored for their performances during the period of November 10-16. Now in its tenth year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

"Prairie Farms and its family of dairies have been the only sponsors of this worthwhile endeavor by the Missouri Valley Conference," said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 21st year with The Valley. "We are grateful for Prairie Farms continued recognition of our student-athletes for their athletic performance and academic success."

A guard for the Southern Illinois men's basketball team, Mullins, a senior from Downers Grove, Ill., averaged 11.5 points, 10.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game, as the Salukis opened the season with wins over California (Pa.) on Nov. 11 and UMass on Nov. 12 in the 2K Sports Classic in Carbondale, Ill.

Mullins, who has a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in finance, tied the school single-game record for assists with 13 and had only one turnover in an 80-73 triumph versus UMass. In that contest, Mullins scored 14 of his 16 points during a second-half rally in which SIU overcame an 11-point deficit.

A libero for the 11th-ranked Wichita State volleyball team, Broussard, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, enabled the Shockers to post road wins at Bradley (3-0 on Nov. 14) and UNI (3-0 on Nov. 15) and clinch the MVC title outright.

Broussard, who has a 3.585 cumulative grade-point average in criminal justice, averaged 6.67 digs and 0.33 aces per set in the two contests and moved into first place on the all-time MVC list for career digs. Broussard, who now has 2,132 career digs, had a match-high 14 digs at Bradley and collected a match-best 26 digs, three assists and two service aces at UNI.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
