Saluki head coach Barry Hinson
Nov. 24, 2013
NAPLES, Fla. - Southern Illinois plays St. Bonaventure of the Atlantic 10 Conference in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Monday at 7:30 p.m. CT. All eight of the participating head coaches spoke at a press conference at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel this evening.
"We have a bunch of guys who are trying to figure out what their roles are, and Southern is going to give us a heckuva challenge," said St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt. "(Desmar) Jackson is going to be one of the best, if not the best, players were going to play against from a perimeter standpoint."
SIU head coach Barry Hinson joked, "I've seen Mark's team play, and his guards could start for us at center. We're not very tall and people ask us what high school we're from, but our guys play hard and I like them."

Series versus St. Bonaventure
The Salukis and Bonnies have met twice before with SIU winning both games. The first meeting took place at St. Bonaventure in 1962. SIU was coming off a six-point loss at Gannon College the night before, but beat SBU, 73-66, behind a 24-point outing by Dave Henson. The second meeting was at a tournament in Honolulu in 1994, which SIU won, 74-72. Chris Carr led SIU with 24 points including the game-winning free throws with six seconds remaining.
Salukis versus the Atlantic 10
Outside of the 52 games versus nearby Saint Louis, the Salukis are 10-1 against the current membership of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The only loss was at VCU in 1978.
Hinson record in preseason neutral-site tournaments
In 12 seasons as a head coach, Barry Hinson has a combined 7-14 record in preseason, neutral-site tournaments while coaching Oral Roberts, Missouri State and SIU. His biggest win came on Nov. 24, 2006, when MSU beat No. 7-ranked Wisconsin at South Padre Island.
Desmar Jackson climbing toward 1,400 career points
G Desmar Jackson (6-5, 180, Sr.) has 1,359 career points (804 at Wyoming, 555 at Southern Illinois) and has scored more points in his college career than any active player in the league. He is the team's leading scorer (22.0 ppg) for the second-straight season. Jackson was named to the seven-man MVC Preseason Team. He averaged 15.1 points and 5.4 rebounds last year for the Salukis and was named honorable mention All-Conference.
Jalen Pendleton takes over the "hybrid" power forward spot
G Jalen Pendleton (6-2, 205, So.) is playing a similar role on this year's team as Jeff Early -- an undersized guard playing the power forward spot. Last year, the 6-foot-1 Early led the nation in rebounding (7.4 rpg) among players 6-foot-1 and under. This season, Pendleton is averaging 13.3 points and 5.0 rebounds -- all off the bench.
Anthony Beane busts out of slump
G Anthony Beane (6-2, 180, So.) began the season with a 9-for-31 shooting slump, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range. He busted out against Missouri S&T by making 8-of-10 shots, including his only 3-point try. Beane was a member of the MVC's All-Freshman team last year. He originally signed with Illinois State, but came with his father, assistant coach Anthony Beane, to Southern instead.
