Tom Hankins will coach the team on Sunday.
Dec. 27, 2013
CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois will be without head coach Barry Hinson on Sunday when the Salukis play at Miami University in their final non-conference game of the season. Hinson will take a leave of absence after his son-in-law passed away of natural causes on Christmas morning.
Associate head coach Tom Hankins will guide SIU against the Redhawks, and director of operations Nate Mast will serve as the team's third assistant coach. Hinson expects to resume coaching duties early next week as Southern Illinois prepares to host Wichita State on Thursday in the Missouri Valley Conference opener.

Desmar Jackson surpasses 1,500 career points
G Desmar Jackson (6-5, 180, Sr.) has 1,514 career points (804 at Wyoming, 710 at Southern Illinois) and has scored more points in his college career than any active player in the league. He is the league's second-leading scorer and ranks 29th in the nation (20.3 ppg) and was named to the seven-man MVC Preseason Team.
Jackson not just a scorer
Jackson is a star on both ends of the court. He ranks second in the MVC with 2.3 steals per game. Nationally, he is one of only five players to rank in the top 33 in both scoring (29th) and steals (33rd).
Series versus Miami University
The Salukis are 1-1 all-time against Miami. The teams met in a BracketBuster game last season in Carbondale, in which SIU rallied to win, 74-68, in overtime. Jeff Early scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Southern. His fadeaway buzzer-beater sent the game to overtime.
Hinson versus the MAC
Barry Hinson is 7-3 lifetime against the current members of the Mid-American Conference. As head coach at SIU, he is 2-0 against MAC opponents with home wins over Miami and Ball State.
Jalen Pendleton a force off the bench at "hybrid" power forward spot
G Jalen Pendleton (6-2, 205, So.) is playing a similar role on this year's team as Jeff Early -- an undersized guard playing the power forward spot. Last year, the 6-foot-1 Early led the nation in rebounding (7.4 rpg) among players 6-foot-1 and under. This season, Pendleton is the team's second-leading scorer (12.3 ppg) and ranks fourth in field goal percentage (.549).
As Pendleton goes, so goes SIU
In the four games Southern has won, Pendleton is the team's top scorer at 19.3 points per game. In the eight losses, however, he averages just 8.8 points.
Desmar Jackson's 20+ point games
Desmar Jackson has already scored 20+ points six times this season, after reaching that mark seven times last year. If he can hit the 20-point plateau a total of eight times this season, he'll be the first Saluki to do so since Kent Williams had 11 20-point games in the 2001-02 season.
Odds and Ends
The last time SIU won three-straight games was the end of the regular season last year...Pendleton has scored 41 points in the last two games...Jackson is one of only 17 players in the nation to average more than 20 points per game and shoot .475 or better...Other than Beane, the Salukis are shooting 26 percent from 3-point range...The Salukis rank 337th out of 351 teams in assists (9.9)...The Salukis rank 312th in blocked shots (2.25)...SIU's opponents are averaging 21 3-point attemtps per game as Southern has played more zone...SIU announced its 25-man, 4-coach All-Century team this week.
