CARBONDALE, Ill. - In celebration of 100 years of SIU football, Saluki Athletics continues to reveal the roster for the SIU All-Century football team with today's announcement of the team's eight running backs. The All-Century team running backs are Muhammad Abdulqaadir, Amos Bullocks, Andre Herrera, Brandon Jacobs, Deji Karim, Tom Koutsos, Burnell Quinn and Arkee Whitlock.
Abdulqaadir was an All-American and a First-Team All-Conference selection. He is sixth all-time at SIU with 2,372 rushing yards. He also ranks fourth in rushing touchdowns with 31 and yards per carry with 6.26 yards per attempt.
Bullocks is a Saluki Hall of Famer and played four years in the NFL. He was also an All-American Honorable Mention. He is third all-time at Southern with 32 rushing touchdowns and fifth in rushing yards with 2,441.
Herrera is also a member of the Saluki Hall of Fame and was a Third-Team All-American. He ran for 2,346 yards, which ranks seventh in school history, and 21 touchdowns, which ranks eighth. He averaged 5.25 yards per carry for his career.
Jacobs played eight seasons in the NFL and won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants. In only one season at SIU, he scored 19 touchdowns, which is ninth on the school's career list. Jacobs also averaged a school record 6.61 yards per carry and helped SIU to a playoff berth.
Karim is a three-year NFL veteran who was an All-American and a Payton Award Finalist in his time at Southern. He was also a First-Team All-Conference selection and named Gateway Conference Player of the Year. The Salukis made the playoffs in both of his seasons at SIU. His 2,080 yards rank eighth on SIU's career list, while he is fifth all-time in touchdowns (26) and third in yards per carry (6.58).
Koutsos is a member of the Saluki Hall of Fame and SIU's all-time leader with 4,715 rushing yards and 52 rushing touchdowns. He was an Honorable Mention All-American and a two-time First-Team All-Conference selection. He recorded 22 career 100-yard games, more than anyone in school history, and helped SIU to one postseason appearance.
Quinn is a Saluki Hall of Famer and was a First-Team All-Conference selection. His 2,798 yards are fourth in school history, and he averaged 5.13 yards per carry.
Whitlock is a member of the Saluki Hall of Fame and a two-time All-American. He was named National Player of the Year and was a Payton Award Finalist in addition to being a two-time First-Team All-Conference selection. His 4,241 rushing yards, 51 rushing touchdowns and 20 career 100-yard games each rank second on SIU's all-time list. In addition, his Saluki teams made three postseason appearances.
On Monday, the All-Century wide receivers, tight ends and offensive linemen will be the next positions announced.
