ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois outside linebacker Jayson DiManche has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Salukis to a 20-10 victory over No. 21 Western Illinois, the league announced Sunday.

This is the first defensive player of the week award for the Salukis this year and the first such honor in DiManche's career.

The sophomore from Hamilton, N.J. had a career-high three sacks for a loss of 43 yards, tied for the team lead with five tackles and had two quarterback hurries against the Leathernecks. His three sacks are the most by a Saluki since Kyle Walker had three against North Dakota State on Sept. 26, 2009.

DiManche led the Saluki defense that held WIU, which came into the game with the nation's top offense, to 160 yards and 29 points under its per game average. The Leathernecks had negative seven yards rushing in the game.

His biggest play came when the Leathernecks had the ball on the SIU four in a 10-point game with just over five minutes to go. On third-and-goal, DiManche dropped WIU quarterback Matt Barr on a sack for a loss of 21 yards. That forced WIU into a field goal that sailed wide, and the Salukis went on to claim the victory.

DiManche is now tied for third in the MVFC in both sacks per game (0.70) and tackles for a loss (10).
