ST. LOUIS, Mo. - SIU junior running back Jewel Hampton has been named Missouri Football Conference Newcomer of the Week for the second straight week, the conference announced Sunday. Hampton set career highs in carries (35) and rushing yards (178) in SIU's 35-28 win against Indiana State. Hampton also rushed for two touchdowns.

Hampton's two TD's pushed him to 17 on the season, which led the Valley and ranks fifth in the nation. It was his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game and sixth on the season. Hampton came into the game needing 57 yards to get 1,000 rushing yards on the season, and he achieved that goal by halftime. It marked the 12th time in the last 13 years that a Saluki back rushed for 1,000 yards.

His 178 yards were the most by a Saluki since Deji Karim rushed for 273 yards against Illinois State in 2009.

After each win this season, a Saluki was honored with a conference award. Lineman Jessy McMullin was named Offensive Lineman of the Week after the season-opening win against SEMO, and placekicker Jackson MacLachlan was honored as the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking the game-winning field goal against Missouri State. Hampton earned Newcomer of the Week honors last season after rushing for 110 yards in SIU's Senior Day win over Eastern Illinois.
