    ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois junior running back Jewel Hampton was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year, the league announced Wednesday.

    Hampton, who transferred to SIU from Iowa, led the MVFC with 17 rushing touchdowns and carried for 1,121 yards, including six 100-yard games. The Indianapolis, Ind. native also added 163 yards receiving and ranked fourth in the conference in all-purpose yards.

    The award has been given annually since 1994 and previous Salukis to win Newcomer of the Year were running backs Brandon Jacobs (2004) and Muhammad Abdulqaadir (2002), and linebacker Teddy Simms (2000).

    The MVFC announced the following specialty award winners:

    Offensive Player of the Year: RB Shakir Bell (Indiana State)

    Defensive Player of the Year: LB L.J. Fort (Northern Iowa)

    Newcomer of the Year: RB Jewel Hampton (Southern Illinois)

    Freshman of the Year: QB Austin Sumner (South Dakota State)

    Coach of the Year: Craig Bohl (North Dakota State)
