    The Southern Illinois men's golf team opened its spring season on Sunday and stands fifth out of 15 teams after Day 1 at the Frito Lay/Taco Bell Intercollegiate, hosted by Jackson State in Choctaw, Miss.

    The Salukis are 21-over par, posting a team score of 309 in the opening round of play. Missouri-St. Louis leads the field with a 5-over score of 293.

    SIU's Drew Novara (2-under) is in a three-way tie for first place among the 84 golfers in the tournament. Through five Fall tournaments, Novara was Southern's stroke leader with a 74.00 average. Wade Thompson (4-over) is tied for 17th place and Caleb Harms (5-over) is tied for 21st.

    The teams will play a final round on Monday.
