PHILADELPHIA, Miss. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team tied for fourth place in the Taco Bell/Frito Lay Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon, hosted by Jackson State. Brandon Cauldwell led the team with a two-round score of 148; he tied for sixth overall.
"We saw some progress today," head coach Leroy Newton said. "If we continue to show some progress, we'll do some good things this year. We're relying on our seniors to play like we know they can."
In the spring's first tournament, Brandon Cauldwell picked up right where he left off. He led the team and tied for sixth overall after firing a two-round total of 148. Cauldwell led the field with 28 pars in the 36-hole tournament. Cauldwell led five Salukis who finished in the top 25 of the 60-player field.
Freshman Drew Novara also had an impressive second round, shooting a 74. Novara finished 19th overall. Another freshman, Ben Patton, competed as an individual and tied for 17th overall. Both freshmen finished in the top 10 in the tournament in Par 4 scoring.
The Salukis take a week off before heading to Alabama for the Samford Invitational on March 4-5.
