The Southern Illinois men's golf team travelled to the Samford Intercollegiate in Hoover, Ala. in search of an escape from the wintry weather back home, but the Salukis found nothing but cold, wind and rain during the two-day tournament where they finished 15th out of 16 teams.

SIU saved its best round of the tournament for last, shooting a 22-over final round at the 7,001-yard Hoover Country Club. However, that score came on the heels of Monday's 47-over first round and today's 37-over second round. Southern compiled a 970 team score -- 79 strokes behind tournament champion South Alabama.

"We expected to go down South and get some good weather and good practice, and we knew we would't be our sharpest," said Saluki head coach Leroy Newton. "We didn't expect the weather to be as bad as it was, and we didn't handle it very well. Every time we had a fat shot out of the mud, we chunked it. We got a little better each round. We had a decent final round but threw away a lot shots."

Ryan Haxel led Southern with a 26-over score of 242. After shooting an 84 on Monday, he had back-to-back rounds of 79, which helped him place 65th out 89 golfers. Right behind him at 27-over was Andrew Novara, while Steve Souchek finished at 29-over. Caleb Harms had a 76 in the final round, the best score of any Saluki golfer, and ended with a 30-over mark.

"We haven't played outside, really, and this is going to make us better down the road," Newton said. "We found out we have a lot of work to do. The kids were saying get me a week on the range and let me hit some balls. They're disappointed, but they are going to fight back."
