The Southern Illinois University men's golf team slipped two spots during Tuesday's final round of the UALR/First Tee Classic in Little Rock, Ark., to finish last out of 14 teams.

Under cold, windy conditions, the Salukis combined for a 36-over par 324 today, and none of Southern's five golfers were able to break 80 during the final 18 holes at the 7,326-yard, par-72 Chenal Country Club.

"The golf course was set up really tough today, and we got off to a bad start and couldn't overcome it," said SIU head coach Leroy Newton.

None of the teams could manage a sub-300 final round, with Louisiana-Monroe carding a 305 to take the tournament title with a three-day score of 25-over par.

"One of the kids who was winning the tournament yesterday (McNeese State's Geoff Fry), shot an 85 today after shooting a 69 yesterday," Newton explained. "That's how much harder it was playing today."

Drew Novara was Southern's top finisher, placing 36th with a three-round score of 16-over par. Steven Souchek (51st), Wade Thompson (53rd) and Caleb Harms (61st) all placed among the bottom third of the field of 74-golfers. Because of unusually cold and wintry weather throughout the month of March, Newton said his team still hasn't had ample practice time back home.

"When all you do is play tournaments, you're so concerned about trying to score that you can't really change anything," he said. "We're down a little bit right now but not discouraged. We know we can play better and we will play better."
