    First Round Standings

Hollister, Mo. - The Saluki men's golf team stands in 11th place after shooting an opening-round 305 on Monday at the Branson Creek Invitational in Hollister, Mo. Rain and thunderstorms forced the first day to be reduced to 18 holes, instead of the scheduled 36.

Southern Illinois' first round total of 305 was 20 strokes off Missouri Valley Conference opponent, Illinois State, which fired a 1-over 285 to lead the 12-team field at the par-71, 7,036-yard Branson Creek Golf Club.

The Salukis' 305 tied the team's best score this spring, and was the best opening-round total since they shot an opening-round 288 at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate last October 7.

Host school, Missouri State, shot a 4-over-par 288, and stands in second, while Murray State (292), Creighton (294) and Drake (294) round out the rest of the top five.

Juniors Phillip Collier and John Danielson led the Southern Illinois scoring with rounds of 4-over 75 apiece, and are tied for 30th overall respectively after the first 18 holes.

Junior Todd Obergoenner shot a 77 and is tied 48th, and senior captain Matt Ellis and sophomore Blake Driskell are tied for 58th after each shooting rounds of 78.

Senior Brandon Vagner and sophomore Jordan Cox, also competing as individuals, shot rounds of 5-over-par 76 and 79.

The Salukis are a mere 10 strokes away from the top six, but will have to work quick to pick up ground on Tuesday. The cancelled 18 holes in the afternoon on Monday will not be made up, leaving only 18 holes remaining for the second day.

The final round will begin on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
