JONESBORO, Ark. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished the Arkansas State Red Wolves Intercollegiate in third place on Tuesday at the RidgePointe Country Club. The Salukis had two golfers in the top 10 in the tournament for the first time this season and extended their streak of consecutive sub-300 scores to six.

"I was really happy with the way we responded today," head coach Leroy Newton said. "The conditions weren't good, and we had the pressure of playing in the top group, and we responded. We moved up a notch."

Jake Erickson and Brandon Cauldwell both finished in the top-10 individuals, giving the Salukis two top-10 finishers for the first time this year. Erickson tied for fifth overall and led the 112-golfer field in par-4 scoring. He was one of only nine golfers to score an eagle.

Erickson's 67 in the second round tied the lowest round of his career and the seventh lowest round in school history. It was Erickson's sixth career round in the 60s, which ties him for fourth all-time in school history.

"We've been putting a lot of work in, and it's paying off," said Erickson, a team captain. "It's a good time of year to be playing like this with the conference tournament coming up."

Cauldwell continued his consistent play for SIU. He finished 10th overall and led the field in pars with 41 in 54 holes. His 10th-place finish was his fifth of the year and seventh top-20 finish.

"I wasn't hitting it very well, and I wasn't hitting it very bad," Cauldwell said. "I was just able to knock it up on the green and two-putt from there."

Caudlwell is tied with Erickson and two others for fourth-place in school history with six career rounds in the 60s. Cauldwell has three this year; Erickson has two.

"They think that they should have made more birdies because they're good players, and the good ones always are striving to get better," Newton said. "But the truth is that they both played fantastic."

Caleb Harms tied for 36th overall with a three-round total of 224. Joe Goelzhauser (227) and Jeffrey Miller (233) finished 53rd and tied for 81st, respectively, to round out the scoring Salukis. Drew Novara competed as an individual and tied for 60th. Novara joined Erickson on the list of nine players to eagled in the tournament.

The Salukis have posted sub-300 team scores in each of the last six rounds. The six-round streak is the longest for Southern Illinois since going eight-straight rounds to start the 2008-09 season.

SIU topped both of the other Missouri Valley Conference schools competing in the tournament. Southern topped Missouri State by 11 strokes and Northern Iowa by 25 strokes.

Up Next: The Salukis are back in action on April 15-16 for the Big Blue Intercollegiate in Nashville, Tenn., which will be the last regular season tournament before SIU hosts the 2013 MVC Championship at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
