OLD HICKORY, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team is the clubhouse leader after two rounds of the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate. Brandon Cauldwell is tied for the tournament lead after shooting a 137 in the first two rounds.
"We played about as well as we could have played," head coach Leroy Newton said. "Those are pretty good scores. Our guys are coming around at the right time. We're starting to get really excited about finishing this tournament and heading to the MVC Championship."
Cauldwell shot a three-under-par 69 in the first round and even better in the second round (68) to grab a tie of the lead. With two rounds in the 60s, Cauldwell moved into third in school history with eight career rounds in the 60s, which includes five this year. Cauldwell needs one more round in the 60s to tie for the all-time mark in school history with Sean McNemar and Todd Obergoenner.
Jake Erickson is in fourth place in the tournament, just one shot behind Cauldwell. Erickson shot a 67 in the first round to tie his career mark, the second-straight tournament Erickson has shot a 67 in a round. By shooting the 67 in the first round, Erickson tied six others for the second-best opening-round score in school history.
Cauldwell and Erickson are tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring at two-under-par. Erickson leads the tournament with 12 birdies in 36 holes. Cauldwell is tied for second in the tournament in pars with 29. Goelzhauser, Cauldwell and Erickson are all among the top-10 in par-4 scoring.
