OLD HICKORY, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team used the third best third-round team score in school history to tie for second at the Big Blue Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The team made up 11 strokes in the final round to tie Tennessee Tech for second. Jake Erickson shot a final round 68 (-4) but fell one stroke short of tournament champion Patrick Newcomb.

"We feel good. On that kind of a course, we shot what we should shoot," head coach Leroy Newton said. "Everyone shot well; everyone contributed. Now we'll go back and put in a couple good weeks of practice together for Prairie Dunes."

Erickson's final-round 68 tied for the fifth best final-round score in school history. Erickson birdied three of the final five holes, but Newcomb's birdie on his final hole secured the win. It was Erickson's fourth round in the 60s this season. Jeffrey Miller shot a final-round 69 (-3) and finished only two shots back of Erickson and tied for fifth overall. The duo led the Salukis to a three-round score of 862, the second best score of the year and ninth best three-round score in school history.

Erickson tied for the tournament lead in Par 3 and Par 5 scoring. Miller tied for the tournament lead in Par 4 scoring. Erickson was one of seven scoring golfers to record an eagle. As a team, SIU finished second in number of pars and second in Par 3 scoring.

George Tate fired a one-under-par 71 in the final round to finish with a 219. Joe Goelzhauser and Jared Harp rounded out the Saluki five. Brandon Cauldwell, Jamie Stocks and Richie Williams all competed as individuals. Cauldwell shot the second-best score among individuals and his best score of the spring season. Cauldwell and Williams also recorded eagles, making SIU one of only two schools with multiple individuals recording an eagle.

The team closes out the season at the MVC Championships on April 30-May 1 in Hutchinson, Kan., at the Prairie Dunes Country Club.
