The Southern Illinois University men's golf team stands in eighth place at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Silvis, Ill. after a weather-shortened opening day of the tournament. Teams were supposed to complete two, full rounds today, but play was suspended at 4:30 p.m. due to lightning in the area and will resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.

The Salukis were in the thick of contention after the first round, standing fifth and trailing leader Wichita State by just 15 strokes. SIU completed just 12 holes in the second round, however, and slipped to eighth place, 41 strokes behind the Shockers, who ended the day tied with Illinois State for first place.

Junior Steven Souchek is having his best tournament of the spring for the Salukis, leading the team at 8-over par and tied for 16th place among 45 golfers at the Par 71 TPC Deere Run Golf Course. He birdied four holes in the first round and entered Round Two at 2-over par. He has yet to pick up a birdie in the second round. Also playing well for Southern is Wade Thompson, who is 10-over par ,and Caleb Harms at 11-over. Harms is the team's stroke-average leader on the year.

Southern is only four strokes out of fifth place as a gap of 16 strokes separates the fourth and fifth-place teams.
