CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team is in third place after the first two rounds of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Joe Goelzhauser led the way and is in sixth place overall. The final round from Dalhousie Golf Club begins tomorrow morning with a split tee start at 8:30 a.m.
"We're tickled to death with how we played today," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We like what position we're in. We're looking forward to getting out there tomorrow and making a run at Illinois State for second."
Joe Goelzhauser led the way with two solid rounds. The senior is fifth in the tournament in par-5 scoring and is one of only three individuals to record an eagle in the first two rounds. Jake Erickson is tied for 18th and is among the top-15 individuals in both par-3 scoring and birdies.
Jeffrey Miller and Caleb Harms are one stroke behind Erickson and tied for 22nd overall in the 45-player tournament. Both Miller and Harms rebounded to shoot better in the second round. Harms had the biggest turnaround in the tournament.
After shooting 85 in his first 18 holes, Harms improved 16 strokes to shoot 69 in the second round. Harms was one of only five golfers to shoot better than par in the second round. Miller shot a 79 in the first round, but fired a 75 in the second round for Southern's second-best second-round score. Brandon Cauldwell is one stroke behind Harms and Miller and is tied for 27th overall.
Southern's second-round total of 296 is the best round for SIU at the MVC Championship since shooting a 293 in the final round of the 2008 Championship. Southern is aiming for its third top-three conference finish in the last five years.
Wichita State leads the field by 24 strokes entering the final round and has the top four individuals. Illinois State is in second, seven strokes ahead of Southern.
