PINEVILLE, Ky. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished fourth at the season-opening Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off, hosted by Morehead State. Jake Erickson and Jeffrey Miller both shot three-round scores of 218 and tied for 12th individually.

"We played three solid rounds of golf," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We left some shots out there, but overall we played pretty good as a team. I'm looking forward to getting some more practice in and playing another tournament next week against some even tougher competition."

Southern improved its team score in each round, and five of the six SIU golfers posted their lowest round in today's final round. Erickson shot a 69 in the second round--his fifth career round in the 60s--to lead a nine-shot improvement from the first to second rounds.

Miller shot a 71 (-1) in the final round to tie Erickson for the team lead. Brandon Cauldwell also shot a final-round 71. Cauldwell tied for 19th, giving SIU three of the top 20 golfers in the 94-player field.

Joe Goelzhauser shot a 73 in the final round and tied for 36th individually. Freshman Drew Novara posted his best round of the tournament, 75, in the final round and finished tied for 40th. Ryan Haxel, another freshman, competed in the tournament as an individual and shot a final-round 73 to tie Novara for 40th overall.

Murray State won the tournament by 16 strokes. The Racers also claimed the individual crown after Patrick Newcomb shot a final-round 68. Newcomb shot a three-round total of 208 and won the individual title by two shots.

SIU turns around and plays again Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Purdue/Midwest Shootout in West Lafayette, Ind.
