    NORMAL, Ill - The Southern Illinois men's golf team is tied for sixth after the first day at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, hosted by Illinois State. Brandon Cauldwell shot a 145 in the first 36 holes, placing him fourth individually in the 81-golfer field. The final round will take place tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 23.

    The tournament saw second-round score drops for every one of the 15 schools in the tournament. SIU's 19-stroke improvement in the second round led to the Salukis owning the fourth-best score in the second round (295). Four of the five SIU golfers lowered their score from the first round.

    Brandon Cauldwell continued his hot play with a 74 in the first round and a 71 in the second round. Cauldwell is five strokes behind the individual leader heading into tomorrow's final round. Newcomer Caleb Harms shot back-to-back 75's and is tied for 13th overall.

    Jake Erickson shot an 83 in the first round and improved 11 strokes to shoot even-par 72 in the second round. Jeffrey Miller (160) and Joe Goelzhauser (160) round out the SIU field and are tied for 62nd individually.

    Against Missouri Valley Conference competition, Southern (609) trails Missouri State (607), trailing the Shockers by just two strokes. Host Illinois State (600) leads all MVC schools and is in third place. Southern is nine strokes ahead of Northern Iowa (618), and 23 strokes ahead of Bradley (632).

    Illinois leads the tournament by 18 strokes over second-place Central Arkansas. Pep Angles (140) of Central Arkansas in the individual leader.
