The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in fourth place out of 16 teams at the Skyhawk Fall Classic, hosted by UT Martin in Buchanan, Tenn. Division II Lee University pulled away from the pack with a 24-under par score to take first place at Paris Landing Golf Course in the Tennessee State Park system.

As a team, the Salukis shot precisely Even-par with a score of 864, which was an eight-stroke improvement over last year's performance at the same tournament.

"It's the same course with the same conditions as last year, which shows our kids are getting better with every tournament," said SIU head coach Leroy Newton. "There were a couple teams ahead of us that played really well. Lee University is just about like a golf school and have been a top program for several years."

Wade Thompson was SIU's best finisher at 2-under par (70-72-72) to claim 13th place out of 87 golfers. The Murray State transfer has led the Salukis in scoring in two of this fall's four tournaments.

"He wasn't hitting the ball really well, but Wade grinded it out and made shots when he had to," Newton observed. "He didn't quit and I'm proud of the way he finished."

Drew Novara shot even par (71-72-73) at the 6,685-yard, par-72 course, good for 17th place overall, while Steve Souchek (2-over), Andrew Mitchell (3-over) and Caleb Harms (5-over) rounded out the scoring for SIU. Junior Brady Brown competed as an individual in his first tournament action of the season, and he delivered the final day's low score with a 71.

"Brady's been improving every day and did a great job on qualifying as an individual to play in this tournament," Newton said. "Today's round was outstanding, and we'll go back and see where he stands with the rest of the kids."

The Salukis play their final fall tournament next week in Clarksville, Tenn.
