HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team is in eighth place after the first two rounds of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, hosted by Austin Peay State University. The final round will take place tomorrow, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
The Salukis bounced back from a 301 in the first round to shoot 290 in the second round. The Salukis are five shots back of conference foe Missouri State, and the teams are paired together for tomorrow's final round.
"We have a chance to put up a good score tomorrow," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We left some shots out there today. We just need to play smart and play within ourselves. We played better in the second round, but we can do even better tomorrow if we do what we're capable of. We're anxious to get out and play tomorrow."
Southern was led by Joe Goelzhauser. The senior shot a 69 in the second round, his second career round in the 60s and one shot away from his single-round career best. Goelzhauser is tied for 19th overall in the 80-player tournament.
"Joe played a great second round," Newton said. "He could have done better than a 77 in the first round, but he didn't let it affect him and played really well in the second round."
Caleb Harms is two shots behind Goelzhauser and tied for 30th overall. Jake Erickson and Jeffrey Miller both shot 74 in the first round and 75 in the second round and are tied for 36th overall. Brandon Cauldwell rounds out the Saluki five with a 152 through two rounds. Cauldwell is tied for 52nd. Southern didn't have any individuals in the field.
Host Austin Peay leads the tournament by three strokes over Lipscomb. Four teams are within five shots of the lead heading into the final round. The Salukis are 16 shots back of the leader.
