Men's golf finishes the fall season with fifth-place finish
Oct. 25, 2011
By John Lock EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished its fall season with a fifth-place finish at the DoubleTree Intercollegiate, hosted by SIU-Edwardsville. Brandon Cauldwell and Jake Erickson both finished in the top 10 individuals. "We were disappointed in the way we played the first round, but we bounced back in the second and third rounds," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We found out that we can play better than a lot of teams in the wind, though. We played a great round in the wind today." After shooting a 310 in the first round, the Salukis improved each of the next two rounds. Brandon Cauldwell led the way in the second round with an even-par 72, and the Salukis fired a 303, a seven stroke improvement from the first round. Jake Erickson shot the lone sub-par round for the Salukis in the third round. Erickson's 71 led the Salukis to a final-round 302. Playing through windy conditions on Tuesday, the Salukis shot the second-best round of any team on the day. Cauldwell finished tied for sixth overall and shot a 223. Cauldwell finishes the fall season with four top-10 finishes in five tournaments. Erickson finished one stroke behind Cauldwell and tied for eighth overall. Jeffrey Miller (235), George Tate (239) and Joe Goelzhauser (243) rounded out the Saluki team. Senior Jared Harp competed as an individual for the second straight tournament. Harp was one of only four players in the tournament to score an eagle. SIU-Edwardsville won the tournament by seven strokes over Missouri State, firing an 893. Eastern Illinois' David Lawrence shot even-par 72 in all three rounds to win the tournament with a score of 216. The Salukis don't play again until Feb. 19 and 20, 2012. The fall season ends with one tournament win for the team and four top-five finishes for the team. Jake Erickson became the first Saluki men's golfer to win a tournament since 2007, and Erickson and Cauldwell both picked up Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors. "We're pretty happy with the fall. We had a good first half of the year," Newton said. "We've got some good players who can do some good things. We'll keep learning how to play, and we should be a tough team in the spring."
