HOOVER, Ala. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team is traveling to the Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala., for the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday, March 4, and 18 holes on Tuesday, March 5. Play starts at 8 a.m. on Monday and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
"We're starting to come around and play well in practice," head coach Leroy Newton said. "Now, we have to have that translate into a tournament. It's time for our seniors to really start playing well."
The Salukis competed at the event last year, finishing 13th. Jake Erickson and Jeffrey Miller will return to the tournament this year. Last year, Erickson led the team and tied for 23rd overall.
With three rounds in the tournament, Erickson will be one round away from the school record for rounds in a career. Erickson, who enters the Samford Intercollegiate with 107 career rounds under his belt, is chasing Quinn McLure, who posted 111 career rounds from 1992-96. McLure and Erickson are the only two Salukis to golf 100 rounds or more for SIU in a career.
