    ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois University men's golfer Jake Erickson was named to the 2013 MVC Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete First Team, the league office announced today. The Saluki senior, who holds a 3.461 GPA and is majoring in management, is a three-time first-team honoree,

    In addition to his academic success, the Springfield, Ill. native was a two-time MVC Golfer of the Week last season. He played in all 34 rounds for SIU and posted two top-five finishes, including a victory at the the Big Blue Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee State on April 16. He posted the team's low score in five tournaments and had the 11th-best scoring average in the conference.

    The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Capital One Academic All-America® program. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of his team's rounds or played at the State Farm MVC Championship. A vote of the league's sports information directors determined the honors.
