PINEVILLE, Ky. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team opens its season at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off in Pineville, Ky., hosted by Morehead State. The tournament will consist of two rounds on Monday and one round on Tuesday.

Southern has opened the season with the Wasioto Winds Kick-Off for seven consecutive seasons. In four of the previous six seasons, SIU has finished in the top three, including a win in the event in 2008. Last year, SIU finished third in the event and finished a tournament under par as a team for the first time since 2007. SIU's 2011 team score (863, -1) was the eighth-best three-round team score in school history.

"We're excited to get the season under way," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We're tired of playing each other all the time. We think we've got a pretty good team, so we're looking forward to seeing how we measure up to outside competition."

The Salukis blend experience with new talent in 2012-13. Four seniors anchor the team, led by Jake Erickson. Erickson led the Salukis in stroke average last year at 74.13, which was the seventh-best single-season stroke average in school history. Erickson won the Springfield City Golf Championship this summer and finished among the top 20 at the Illinois State Amateur.

Brandon Cauldwell joins Erickson as a returning captain from a year ago. Cauldwell led SIU in two fall tournaments last year and also at the MVC Championships. Jeffrey Miller, another returning senior, led the Salukis at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off last year, carding a three-round score of 2012 (-4) to finish fourth individually. Miller led three Salukis in the top 20 at the Illinois State Amateur with his fifth overall.

An incoming freshman, Drew Novara, was the third Saluki in the top 20. The Murphysboro native tied for ninth in the tournament. He was a two-time Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference individual champion in high school and placed 23rd at the State Championships as a senior.

Joe Goelzhauser returns for his senior year after placing second among SIU golfers at the MVC Championships.
