ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois senior Brandon Cauldwell has been named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It was Cauldwell's second career MVC Golfer of the Week honor.
Cauldwell won the Purdue/Midwest Shootout by seven strokes on Sunday. He fired back-to-back 69's in the 36-hole tournament. Only one other golfer in the 56-player tournament broke par, and Caudwell was the only golfer to break 70.
The win was the first of Cauldwell's Saluki career. He became the ninth SIU men's golfer in history to win a tournament. Teammate Jake Erickson won the Skyhawk Fall Classic and the Grover Page Classic last year, giving SIU individual tournament winners in back-to-back years for the first time since 2003-04 and 2004-05.
Cauldwell is the ninth men's golfer in SIU history to win MVC Golfer of the Week honors more than once. His 36-hole total (138) tied for the sixth-lowest such total in school history. With two rounds in the 60s, Cauldwell tied teammate Jake Erickson and two others for fifth on the SIU all-time list.
The conference honor is the second of his career for Cauldwell. He also earned the honor on Oct. 5, 2011, after placing third individually at the DA Weibring Intercollegiate.
The Salukis compete at the DA Weibring Intercollegiate next time they are in action. The tournament is on Sept. 22-23 in Normal, Ill.
