CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki men's golf team returns to action this Sunday and Monday at the 15-team D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate hosted by Illinois State. SIU will look to continue its momentum after finishing in the top-five in each of its first three tournaments this fall.
Southern Illinois will go up against the toughest field of the fall, with No. 3-ranked Illinois and top-100 team Illinois State in the mix at the par-70 Weibring Golf Club.
"This will be a competitive tournament, and showcase some very talented teams," said head coach Leroy Newton. "We've had a strong start, and we're excited to compete after being off last week."
In addition to host Missouri Valley Conference opponent Illinois State, the Salukis will go up against league members Bradley, Creighton, Missouri State and Northern Iowa.
"Having a majority of the Valley teams in the field will give us a chance to see where we stand for the spring," Newton said. "This tournament is a great opportunity to build confidence."
So far this fall, the Salukis has finished ahead of all four MVC teams they've competed against.
SIU shot a 54-hole 854, the fourth-best score in school history, to take second at last year's D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate. Illinois came in first with a school-record 837, and Illinois State finished eight strokes behind the Salukis for third.
Eastern Illinois, Illinois Central College, Lewis, Lindenwood, Loyola College, and SIU-Edwardsville will also participate.
The tournament will get underway with 36 holes on Sunday, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, and conclude with 18 holes on Monday beginning at 9 a.m.
