Stillwater, Okla. --The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team opened up their spring season Friday afternoon at Oklahoma State University.
The Salukis played the first match ever in OSU's brand new Greenwood Tennis Center, falling to the Cowboys 4-0.
"It is really tough to play that great of a team the first match of the season," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson. "There is no doubt that OSU is going to be a nationally ranked team this season."
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has implemented a revised set of dual match rules that will run on a trial system from Jan. 1 to Feb. 17.
"Playing with the new rules was tough today," said Nelson. "We didn't capitalize on opportunities when we needed to."
The revisions to the rules were created to decrease match length time and engage fans. The new rules include three doubles matches that will each consist of one set to 6, with no-ad scoring and a tie-breaker at 5-all. Once a team has won two doubles matches, the remaining doubles match shall not be completed.
Also, six singles matches will follow the doubles. Each singles match is two out of three sets, with each set using no-ad scoring and a tie-breaker at 5-all in each set.
"Our doubles were up 5-4 but unfortunately they didn't get to finish," said Nelson. "That was the only bright spot today."
Southern Illinois will face South Dakota State tomorrow in Stillwater, Okla. beginning at 10 a.m.
"We are excited to get back tomorrow because we have our first match jitters out of the way and hoping that we can compete at a higher level."
