DES MOINES, Iowa-- The Southern Illinois University men’s tennis team completed day one of the 2013 MVC Individual Championships Friday, advancing three singles players to the semi-finals.
“Jonny (Rigby), Brandon (Florez) and Martijn (Admiraal) all performed well today for us in singles,” said SIU head coach Dann Nelson.
Senior Brandon Florez, competing in flight two, kicked-off the day for the Salukis battling Creighton’s Brandon Lee. Florez took the match 6-3, 7-6 (5) to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals.
Martijn Admiraal recorded a win in flight seven defeating Creighton’s Nick Thompson 7-5, 6-2.
Also advancing for the Salukis was freshman Jonny Rigby. Rigby fell in flight four 1-6, 1-6 to Wichita State’s Alvaro Guiterrez before bouncing back against Creighton’s Elliot Baker, 7-6 (6), 6-1.
“We would of liked to have more singles players in the semi-finals,” said Nelson. “We look forward to the start of doubles tomorrow and the singles semi-finals.”
Doubles pool play is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday followed by the singles semi-finals and consolation matches.
