DES MOINES, Iowa -- Junior Badr Cherradi highlighted the Saluki Men's Tennis team today at the first day of the State Farm Missouri Valley Individual Championships, where Southern advanced players in four of six singles flights to the semifinals.

Cherradi, who is filling in at the No. 1 singles spot for the injured Jorge Cavero, defeated Mattheus Pereira of Wichita State -- who is ranked No. 66 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association -- 6-3, 6-4. The junior native of Lyon, France, lost to Illinois State's Alex Pelaez, 2-6, 2-6, but Cherradi has a chance to take down another nationally ranked singles player tomorrow where he will confront Drake's Anis Ghorbel in the Flight One semifinals, who is ranked No. 51 nationally and fifth regionally by the ITA.

Junior Orhan Spahic went 1-1 in Flight Six and advanced to at least the semifinals for the third straight year. The Bosnian native lost to Drake's Jonathan Hadash 2-6, 2-6, but bounced back against Creighton's Elliot Baker, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, to keep his streak alive.

Also advancing for the Salukis was senior Stanislas Rodier (1-1 in Flight Two) and freshman Martijn Admiraal (1-1 in Flight Four). Rodier fell 1-6, 1-6 to Wichita State's David Cavalcanti before bouncing back against Bradley's Juan Diego Cuadrado, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Admiraal lost to Drake's Alen Salibasic 1-6, 2-6, and came back to defeat Bradley's Hamish Weerasinghe, 6-2, 6-3.

"We hope to continue our success tomorrow as we start doubles," said Head Coach Dann Nelson.

Day Two begins with doubles at 9 a.m. where the No. 42 Saluki tandem of junior Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal will lead Southern's doubles attack.
