DES MOINES, Iowa - It was a day of mixed emotions for the men's tennis team as it won six of the combined ten singles and doubles matches the Salukis played on day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.

SIU set itself up for a good showing at the annual individual championship meet, with three Salukis and two doubles teams will face opponents in the semi-final rounds on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. Junior Alex Nomicos grabbed the first win for SIU, defeating Carlo Contente of Wichita State, 6-4, 6-2 for the win at the No. 2 spot. He was , followed at the No. 3 spot by sophomore Bojan Ilieveski, who beat Indiana State's Ivan d'Argence Arceo, 6-3, 6-4. Both Nomicos and Ilieveski will compete in the semi-finals tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

Junior Lukasz Soswa won an early round match over Rishi Garbharran (SMS) in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot, but then fell to Wichita State's Marko Despot in the quarter-finals, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Tomas Gonzalez found the same fate in the quarter-final round of the No. 5 flight, losing to Matthew McClure of Drake in second set tie break, 6-3, 7-6(2).

In the No. 6 flight, junior Julian Angel Botero moved to Saturday's semi-finals with a battle win against Bradley's Alex Roby, which went to a tie break in both sets, 7-6(2), 7-6(3). Botero will compete in the semi-finals at noon Saturday.

Doubles action found two of three teams moving on to the next round, but it wasn't who you'd think.

Soswa and Ilieveski, a duo that has solidified itself at the No. 1 team this fall, lost to Illinois State's Pettinari and Uskokovic, 9-7. It was the No. 2 doubles team of Nomicos and Botero, as well as the No. 3 team of Bong and Gonzalez that moved on to the next round. The No. 2 duo defeated McCarthy and Gonzalez of Creighton with a five point tie break, 9-8(5), while the No. 3 team easily beat SMS' Garbharren and Pavlicic, 8-5.
