CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.-- The Southern Illinois University men’s tennis team defeated Austin Peay University Saturday, 4-3, topping the Governors for the first time in two years.
“The match was not our best tennis but the guys fought hard and pulled out a big win against a tough opponent,” said SIU assistant coach Alejandro Vial.
The Salukis were dominant in singles competition taking four of six matches from their opponents. Jorge Cavero, Badr Cherradi, Jonny Rigby and Martijn Admiraal all topped APSU pushing Southern toward redemption.
Jonny Rigby was sharp on the court putting away Iago Seffrin of APSU 6-3, 6-3.
Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek were the only doubles winners for the Salukis, winning 8-5.
“There were many times we could've lost the match, but we showed a lot of heart and stayed with it,” said Vial. “We lost to these guys the last three times so it was huge for our confidence to pull this one out.”
Southern Illinois is on the road again next week traveling to Memphis for dual match on Fri., Feb. 8.
