CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team picked up its third-straight win on Saturday afternoon, topping Chicago State 5-1. The Salukis won Nos. 1-5 singles in the dual match that did not include doubles play.
We played with confidence and were able to take care of business tonight," head coach Dann Nelson said. "Jonny and Filip have won four-in-a-row. Szymon and Michal have won three-in-a-row. Jorge and Filip did not allow a game. Jeremy was able to push his match to a tiebreak that was tied at nine. Unfortunately, he lost the next two points in his first match as a Saluki. He was nervous in the first set but settled down in the second and won 6-3. Jeremy has weapons and will only get better. We now focus on our next match with EIU at home. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going."
Jonny Rigby stayed hot at No. 1 singles, improving his spring record to 5-1. Rigby was forced to a third set for the first time this fall but dominated the deciding set on his way to a 6-4, 5-6(4), 6-0 win. Jorge Cavero moved up to No. 2 singles for the match and responded with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win.
At No. 3 singles, Michal Kianicka won for the fourth time in his last five matches, 6-3, 6-0. Szymon Opieczonek won his third-straight match easily, 6-1, 6-1. Filip Aleksic dominated at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Jeremy Dixon, in his first match for the Salukis, narrowly lost a three-set decision, 6-1, 3-6, 11-9.
